THE LANGER'S BALL- '7 Year Itch' (2014)

Straight ahead, no-frills Irish ballads with just a hint of razor blades, safety pins and American rock ‘n’ roll!

American celtic-punk band The Langer’s Ball released a new EP last month and have also made it available for free download so there is absolutely no reason at all for you not to get this downloaded right NOW! Hailing from Saint Paul in Minnesota the Irish make up the second largest population of the city at 14% and despite being only half the number of those of German descent they managed to somehow (I wonder how that was?!?!) control all facets of government. Of course the days when the Irish ran the city are long gone now but still many of those in local government, the Police and Fire Service come from typical Irish backgrounds. Playing as a duo since 2007 Michael and Hannah released a couple of albums back then that were well received by the celtic-punk community which persuaded them to fill out the sound somewhat and they recruited a few local musicians and so The Langer’s Ball were born. As is usual in bands people come and go but what you hear now is as stable a line-up as the band have ever had.
The Langer's BallAs well as those two early albums back in 2007 and 2008 The Langer’s Ball have also released ‘Drunk, Sick, Tired’, a live St Patricks day recording, in 2011 and ‘The Devil, Or The Barrel’ in 2012. This Ep is their first release since then and was originally recorded as a session for Iowa Public Radio for the Fol Tree radio programme. The session aired on August 8th 2014 and was such a success the band decided to make it available to all. A extra track ‘ABCD’ Hannah & Michael did in the studio one night while messing around.
The title of the EP refers to this being the bands seventh year together and with a bunch of new songs they were itching to release and with the success of the session it all came together perfectly to release this to The Langer’s Ball growing army of fans at home and abroad. The music itself is reminiscent of the more folkier side of celtic-punk but with plenty of bite with the extremely well played accordion to the fore throughout the EP. ‘Jug Of This’ kicks off and begins the near 30 minute journey that takes us through The Langer’s Ball repertoire and elements of country sneak in but the music always returns to Irish reels and rocking! ‘Mackeys Daughter’ is the best example of this and is followed by ‘Johnny, You’re A Rovin Blade’ with the penny whistle taking centre stage over some thrashing guitars which could have been a wee bit louder me thinks. ‘Gods Gonna Cut You Down’ could well have been written by the Man In Black himself and starts all slow before speeding up and then settling into a tune that the Man would have been quite pleased with as well.
“Well, you may throw your rock and hide your hand
Workin’ in the dark against your fellow man
But as sure as God made day and night
What’s done in the dark will be brought to the light”
‘Whiskey Chaser’ is yer typical tale of touring the States getting pissed and is followed by the first song I’ve ever heard extolling the virtues of ‘Cork Dry Gin’. Only ever spotting the stuff on the ferry in the duty free shop I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bottle outside of then and certainly none of my crowd ever drank the stuff but each to his or own and hearing this certainly paints it a pretty picture. ‘As I Roved Out’ ends the radio session on a fine note with a uplifting tune about a soldier taking advantage of a young girl. the final song ‘ABCD’ is the bonus track and brings the EP to an end and very good it is too.
Many on this side of the ‘broad atlantic’ will not have heard of The Langer’s Ball and will have next to no chance of being able to get their records so why not take a chance and partake of this free download. It won’t cost you a penny and take my word for it you’ll be very happy you did.
