SINGLE REVIEW: BASTARD HYENA – ‘All Hyenas Goes To Heaven’ (2021)

New Celtic-Punk band alert!!

The new single from a band less than a year old we give you Bastard Hyena.

One thing the Celtic-Punk scene has never been short of is bands with the word ‘Bastard’ in the title. Great bands like Uncle Bard And The Dirty, Mr. Irish, Bay Street, Middle Class, Smokey (no not them), Bearded Irishmen, Bunch Of, On Parade and even Aires Bastardos from Argentina! Now we can add another one this time from Gothenburg in Sweden. Bastard Hyena are pretty much the newest band in Celtic-punk having come together towards the end of 2020. With a love of both Celtic and Bluegrass music they chuck in melodic Pub-Punk and come up with ‘Trashgrass’ with songs about dopamines, loss, love and middle finger to right wing politics.

The single is a loving tribute to a beloved friend and sister that recently passed away. For someone who would’ve been disappointed to have a slow, sad song and instead got the upbeat party song they wanted and deserved! The first track is ‘All Hyenas Goes To Heaven’ a fast and furious thrashy Celtic-Punk number with the emphasis on fast. It’s only just over two minutes long and Carl’s vocals remind me of snotty American 80’s Punk bands. Played with heart and banjo heavy it’s very definitely a unpolished gem but what it’s missing in production value it more than makes up for in heart!

“I know you wouldn’t want me to write a slow sad song
So I wrote this song for you and others to shout and sing along
Through cheers and tears we raise our glass to honor who you were
A lovely friend, so confident and covered in striped fur”

The only other track is ‘Old And Golden Days’ and follows much the same path only shorter and faster! Telling of the past and the adventures we get up to and the memories we will always hold.

All Hyenas Goes To Heaven is available on Bandcamp at the link below for ‘name your price’ download. Meaning you can pay whatever you like for it. The near future will see Bastard Hyena release a split tape with acoustic songs which will be available physically and digitally on Bandcamp in the new year. It’s fair to say that the Celtic-Punk scene is heavily biased to just a handful of bands but hopefully it’s changing as new bands come along and are introduced to wider audiences. This site isn’t for the Dropkick Murphys or Flogging Mollys it’s for bands just like Bastard Hyena.
