CELTIC Celtic-Punk from the occupied country of Brittany. 3 tracks (+another 3!) of season themed tracks from the great Sons Of O’Flaherty.

This site is dedicated to all forms of Celtic music specifically Celtic-Punk and what we especially love is to hear music from the Celtic nations themselves so we’re delighted to bring you the new 3-track EP from Sons Of O’Flaherty. The band hail from Vannes in the north-western tip of Brittany, an area where almost 10% of children are brought up in Breton speaking schooling so were talking about that rare thing here. A Celtic celtic-punk band!! Last year they had the novel idea of releasing an EP for each of the seasons. They began last year with the first EP Fall and 3 great tracks that included the brilliant ‘Where I Belong’ Ska tinged bagpipe heavy Celtic-Punk a hymn to their home Brittany.

The video was actually shot it in 2019 but thanks to Covid it was postponed with the guys eventually releasing it last September saying “so we’ve changed a little physically since then but we’re still very happy with it“!

Just before the end of the year the second of the four seasons landed with Winter and the EP begins with ‘Somewhere In The Middle’ a powerful fiddle led number about friendships and keeping friendships going. The perfect mix of acoustic and electric with both sides easily heard. The standout track is ‘The Pack’ that tells of the need to get away from abusive relationships but in a simple way without need for sloganeering. Fast and shouty with great vocals. The EP ends with a song that we missed for our Christmas special, ‘Christmas Without You’. A beautiful song introduced by the band as

“The band was created years ago in a pub in our hometown of Vannes. The pub was called John R. O’Flaherty, and we met there and started to play together there, hence our name. In 2017, Patricia, the landlady, sadly passed away. This song is in her memory. We love you Patou.”

A swirling gem of an Irish influenced Folk ballad and we’re pleased to remember Patricia here. R.I.P. The EP is only 1 euro. Yes you read that right only 1 euro so you have no excuses and if you want to see more Celtic-Punk music then send that euro over to them via the Bandcamp player below.

The combined history of the Celtic nations and their people is one of oppression and repression. Their languages and culture have been trampled and attempts to extinguish them continue to this day. Out of adversity though springs hope and Brittany has embraced Celtic-Punk as a way to promote their identity and culture and Sons Of O’Flaherty are at the forefront of that. We are half way through the planned Sons Of O’Flaherty releases for 2024 and we look forward to bringing you them as soon as they come out!
